Your Immigration Update

Category-based Express Entry draws can offer opportunities for candidates who may not have a competitive CRS score in CEC draws. But qualifying for a category doesn’t guarantee you’ll receive an invitation.

There are several things to keep in mind:

  • Category-based draws may be less frequent than CEC draws. Some categories go months or even years without a draw. STEM, for example, hasn’t had a draw since 2024.

  • Your CRS score is still important. Candidates are ranked by their scores, even in category-based draws.

  • Eligibility rules can change. Occupation-based categories now require 12 months of eligible work experience within the past three years.

  • Your occupation may be removed. IRCC can change which jobs qualify for each category.

If you’re relying on a category-based draw, it’s worth having a backup plan. Improving your CRS score, exploring PNP options or gaining Canadian work experience could give you more opportunities to receive an invitation.

Did Someone Say Draw

As of October 6, 2026, 7,695 candidates are in the BC PNP Skills Immigration pool, with most scoring between 80 and 119 points. The next pool update is expected on November 5, 2026.

Immigration In The Media

A new report from the Calgary Chamber of Commerce says immigration will play an important role in Alberta’s economic future.

The report comes ahead of Alberta’s October 19 referendum, which includes several questions about immigration and access to provincial services.

According to the Chamber’s survey, 71% of larger businesses say immigrant workers are important to their operations. More than half of Chamber members surveyed also oppose giving Alberta greater control over immigration.

The findings highlight how much Alberta businesses rely on newcomers, even as the province considers tighter immigration rules.

Money Matters: Vancouver Rents Dropped in October

Vancouver rents have dropped slightly, but it remains Canada’s most expensive rental market.

  • 2 bedroom: $3,325/month

Today's Tip: Enjoy Canadian Thanksgiving

If you’re new to Canada, Thanksgiving can be a great chance to spend time with friends, family or your new community.

Celebrated on the second Monday in October, Canadian Thanksgiving usually means a big meal with dishes like turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie.

Invited to someone’s home? Consider bringing dessert, flowers or a dish from your own culture to share. You might also be asked to say what you’re thankful for, and don’t be surprised if the day ends with a walk outside to enjoy the fall colours!
