Hey there,

Today, we dig into whether Canada’s hiring trends and immigration system are lining up (hint, they aren’t), plus how provincial nominees fare in Canada’s job markets after becoming permanent residents.

We also dig into minimum wage updates, some tips for networking, and a recent stat on the prevalence of people who are overweight in Canada.

Your Immigration Update

Canada has switched to more skills-based hiring, but Canadian immigration selection hasn’t really kept up. In today’s news item, we dig into whether Canada’s immigration system can evolve alongside labor market hiring trends — or if we’re doomed to see a widening gap between how employers hire and how newcomers are selected. Read more here.

We know getting a provincial nomination is a solid option for those looking to become permanent residents in Canada. But how do provincial nominees (and their spouses) fare in Canada’s job market after they’re successful in getting PR? We dig into some recent data from StatsCan to learn what’s what when it comes to provincial nominee career outcomes. Get the details.

Immigration In The Media

Okay - you caught us, we wrote this one. But it’s based on recent media from Remitly covering why people want to move from abroad to Canada. (Canada is the most desirable country to move to in the world, according to this report!)

It made us feel really good, and definitely reflected back many of the things our team loves about Canada. Learn why people love Canada here.

Money Matters

The minimum wage increased across several Canadian provinces and territories on October 1, leaving Alberta behind as the province with the lowest minimum wage. CTV covers why Alberta’s Premier is defending this decision.

Curious to learn more about Canada’s minimum wages? We’ve outlined what each province pays, at a minimum, here.

Career Moves: Networking = Free Interview Practice

Networking often feels intimidating, but think of it as low-pressure interview practice. Each coffee chat, LinkedIn message, or industry event is an opportunity to practice talking about yourself in a professional but relaxed way. The more you practice, the more natural your responses will feel when it’s time for the real interview.

Even casual conversations can teach you a lot about what employers value. By asking good questions about their business or challenges, you’ll gain insights you can later use to tailor your answers. Networking builds confidence and often uncovers opportunities before jobs are even posted.

Today’s Tip: One fun way to be healthy in Canada.

StatsCan dropped some new data today on the prevalence of overweight and obesity in Canada — and it’s on the rise. It shows the pandemic had serious and (so far) lasting negative impacts on the healthy habits of Canadians. But, StatsCan doesn’t give tips for improvement, it just shared the data. So we’re filling in the gaps there.

One of our favourite tips for staying healthy in Canada is to make it your mission to explore Canada’s abundant green spaces. We talk more about goal setting for health via the link below. But why not make it a goal to visit a green space for 30 minutes a day (if it’s accessible nearby), or for 3 hours each weekend?
