Your Immigration Update

British Columbia is launching a new PNP pathway for cleaners and security workers employed by public health authorities in rural and remote communities. The one-time initiative opens June 15 and is capped at 250 nominations.

Key points:

  • Open to eligible cleaners, janitors, caretakers, and security guards working for a BC public health authority.

  • Applicants must have at least nine months of full-time experience with the same employer.

  • Only workers in designated rural and remote communities are eligible.

  • Registration is open from June 15 to August 31, 2026.

  • Successful applicants can use their nomination to apply for permanent residence.

This initiative recognizes the important role support staff play in keeping rural health systems running and offers a new pathway to permanent residence for eligible workers already living and working in BC.

Immigration-related court cases in Canada have more than quadrupled since 2020, leading some lawyers to question whether automation tools are contributing to unfair refusals. While IRCC says artificial intelligence does not make immigration decisions and that all refusals are reviewed by human officers, concerns remain about how technology is used to organize and assess applications.

The data does not prove that automation is causing more court challenges. Rising application volumes, reduced immigration targets, staffing pressures, and growing backlogs may also be playing a role. What is clear is that more applicants are turning to the courts to challenge immigration decisions, raising important questions about transparency and how technology is shaping Canada’s immigration system.

Travelling to Canada for the FIFA World Cup? Watch out for immigration scams claiming there is a special “FIFA visa” or guaranteed entry. Visitors still need the right travel documents and must meet Canada’s regular entry rules.

IRCC invited 4,500 French-speaking Express Entry candidates on May 28, with a minimum CRS score of 409. However, IRCC says some eligible candidates did not receive their ITA and should wait while the department investigates.

Immigration In The Media

Canada’s new asylum law is leaving some Iranian refugee claimants facing an uncertain future. Under Bill C-12, people who make a refugee claim more than one year after first arriving in Canada may be found ineligible for a refugee hearing. Lawyers and refugee advocates say this could affect vulnerable individuals who initially visited Canada temporarily before later deciding it was no longer safe to return home.

CBC recently highlighted the stories of Iranian women who fled after the 2022 Mahsa Amini protests and now fear they may lose access to Canada’s refugee determination process. While Canada has suspended deportations to Iran because of safety concerns, affected claimants may be left without a clear path to permanent residence. They cannot access the normal refugee process and have no avenue for a permanent solution in Canada, which may lead to separation from family members.

For many, the only alternative is a humanitarian application, which can take years to process. Advocates are calling for exemptions to prevent vulnerable people from being left in legal limbo.

Money Matters: Paying Rent on Time Can Boost Your Credit Score

Paying rent on time could help you build credit in Canada. Newcomers often arrive without a Canadian credit history, which can make it harder to access credit cards, loans, or future mortgage options. Rent reporting services can send your on-time rent payments to Equifax, helping build your payment history, credit history, and credit mix. Our trusted partner, Borrowell, can help you report past, current, and future rental payments to Equifax.

Before signing up, make sure your rent payments are on time, since late payments may hurt your score. You should also use a trusted provider, check your credit report regularly, and keep building credit in other ways, too.

Career Moves: What Newcomers Should Know About Employment Insurance

Employment Insurance (EI) can be an important safety net for newcomers working in Canada, but it is not automatic. Food Banks Canada recently warned that Canada’s shift toward part-time, contract, temporary, and gig work can make it harder for many workers to access EI.

Our guide explains what newcomers should know, including:

  • EI can help if you lose your job through no fault of your own, or need support for sickness, parental leave, or caregiving.

  • You usually need 420 to 700 insurable hours to qualify, depending on where you live.

  • EI contributions are taken automatically from most paycheques.

  • Regular EI payments are usually 55% of your average weekly earnings, up to a maximum amount.

  • EI is not social assistance, so it does not affect spousal sponsorship obligations.

Understanding EI can help you plan ahead and know what support may be available if your work situation changes.

Today's Tip: The 5 Biggest Rental Challenges for Newcomers
