Your Immigration Update

New IRCC data shows that Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) approvals have become harder to get, with refusal rates for new applications increasing to 21% in 2025.

Key findings include:

  • New PGWP approval rates fell from 87% in 2023 to 79% in 2025.

  • PGWP extensions continue to have very high approval rates at 97%.

  • 154,610 PGWPs were issued between January and November 2025, down 36.5% from 2023.

  • Business, commerce, computing/IT, and health-related programs continue to account for the largest share of PGWPs issued.

If you plan to study in Canada, make sure you choose a PGWP-eligible program. If you later apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit, be sure to submit a complete application with all required documents, including language test results where required.

Quebec’s October election could have a major impact on the future of the Quebec Experience Program (PEQ). Once the current intake closes on October 31, the next government will decide what happens next, including whether there will be more intakes and who will be eligible to apply.

We break down where Quebec’s three leading political parties stand on the PEQ, what each outcome could mean for applicants, and why anyone eligible for the current intake should pay close attention.

Immigration In The Media

International graduates in Edmonton are protesting after their Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) applications were refused. Many say they enrolled in programs offered through Portage College and its private college partners because they believed they would qualify for a work permit after graduation. Some students say they have fewer than 70 days left before their status expires.

IRCC says there have been no changes to PGWP eligibility rules and that only programs leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate qualify for a PGWP. Portage College says immigration decisions are made by IRCC and that it is seeking clarification while encouraging affected students to seek legal or immigration advice.

Career Moves: Why More Canadians Are Looking for a New Job

Nearly 1 in 4 Canadian workers say they’re planning to change jobs, according to a new Randstad Canada survey. The biggest reason is higher pay, but better work-life balance and more opportunities for career growth are close behind. Among Gen Z workers, 42% say they’re considering a move.

The survey also found that flexibility, paid time off, and health benefits remain important when choosing an employer. While many workers are happy with their current workplace, they’re increasingly looking for roles that offer a better overall quality of lif, not just a bigger paycheque.

Today's Tip: Ontario Trillium Benefit Payment Coming August 10

If you qualify for the Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB), your next payment is scheduled for August 10, 2026. The OTB combines three provincial tax credits into a single monthly payment to help eligible Ontarians with costs such as rent, property taxes, energy bills, and sales tax.

To receive the payment, you must have filed your 2025 tax return, even if you had little or no income. The amount you receive depends on your income, family size, and whether you qualify for one or more of the three credits. Setting up CRA direct deposit can help you receive your payment faster.
