Your Immigration Updates
Canada ran its third Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) draw of 2026, inviting 423 candidates to apply for permanent residence through Express Entry. This round came with a higher CRS cut-off of 749 compared to the previous PNP draw of 746, but issued fewer invitations overall, down from 681.
While this draw was smaller, the average size of PNP draws has been rising, a key trend to watch as IRCC works toward its 2026 PNP targets. Want the bigger picture on this draw and where PNP draws are heading this year? Check out our full coverage.
LMIA processing times can change each month, and the government regularly updates them. As of December 2025, the fastest options were Global Talent and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) at 10 business days each. The high-wage stream was closer to 50 business days, and the permanent resident stream was the longest by far at 274 business days.
One important thing to know: LMIA time does not include your work permit time. Work permits are processed separately by IRCC and can add a long wait – for example, inside-Canada work permits are listed at 228 days. Use these timelines to plan ahead and give yourself extra time.
Immigration In The Media
Rumours have been spreading online that Canada is ending open work permits in 2026. IRCC says that’s not true – there has been no official announcement that open work permit programs are shutting down this year.
This shows how false information on social media and unofficial websites can scare newcomers. And that while some temporary programs do have end dates, that does not mean Canada is ending all open work permits.
If you see a claim about immigration rules online, check IRCC’s official website or talk to a licensed immigration consultant before worrying or sharing it.
Did Someone Say Draw
Manitoba issued 47 PNP invitations in a targeted Skilled Worker draw held on January 29, 2026.
Ontario issued 1,825 invitations in its first OINP draw of 2026, held on February 2, 2026.

Money Matters: What to Look for When Choosing a Bank in Canada
If you’re new to Canada or thinking about switching banks, it’s worth comparing a few basics when choosing a bank in Canada.
Monthly fees: Often $5–$30/month unless you keep a minimum balance (some newcomer accounts are free).
ATM fees: Your bank’s ATMs are usually free; other ATMs can charge extra.
Cheques: You may need a void cheque for rent or direct deposit.
Debit limits: Some accounts cap monthly transactions.
International cards: They don’t always work, and cash advances can be pricey.
Taking a few minutes to compare these basics can save you money and stress later on. The best bank for you is the one that fits your daily needs now and supports your goals as you settle into life in Canada.

Today's Tip: FIFA Tickets Don’t Equal a Visa, So Apply Early
There’s no special FIFA visa for the 2026 World Cup in Canada. If you’re planning to attend, you’ll need to apply for a regular visitor visa or eTA, and do it early.
Having match tickets doesn’t guarantee approval, so make sure your travel documents are sorted well in advance.
