A higher language score could make a big difference to your Canadian immigration chances, even if you already meet the minimum requirements.
For Express Entry, improving your English or French can increase your CRS score in more than one way. Reaching CLB 9 can be especially valuable because it may unlock extra skill transferability points.
Retaking a test may be worth considering if:
Your current CRS score is not competitive.
You still have language points available to gain.
A higher score could unlock extra CRS points.
Improving your language is faster than gaining more work experience or education.
But retaking a test is not always the best move. Your timeline, other immigration options and how many points you could actually gain should all be considered.
Canadian citizens and permanent residents who want to host their parents or grandparents for extended visits in Canada now have more flexibility when meeting the income requirement for a super visa. IRCC has clarified the two options families have to meet the minimum necessary income.
As a host, you may be able to:
Use your income from either of the previous two tax years.
Combine your income with your parent or grandparent’s eligible income if you already meet at least 75% of the required amount.
This could help families whose income has changed or whose parents or grandparents have ongoing income, such as a pension or rental income.
Other Super Visa rules still apply, including the requirement to purchase eligible health insurance.

Saskatchewan has recorded its first conviction under its foreign worker protection law, after a company admitted to charging a foreign worker $12,000 for a job. The company was ordered to repay the worker and pay additional fines.
The province says it has increased enforcement and has already cancelled more than 10 businesses’ certificates to hire foreign workers this year. Other employers are also facing charges.
The takeaway for newcomers: You should not have to pay an employer to get a job in Canada. Be cautious of anyone asking for money in exchange for employment or immigration sponsorship, and check that any immigration consultant you use is properly licensed.
Money Matters: September Canada Child Benefit Payment Is Coming
The next Canada Child Benefit (CCB) payment is coming on September 18, 2026. This tax-free monthly payment helps eligible families with the cost of raising children under 18.
Families could receive up to:
$679.75 per month for each child under six
$573.58 per month for each child aged six to 17
Newcomers may qualify too. Permanent residents and protected persons do not have a waiting period. Some temporary residents can qualify after living in Canada for at least 18 months.
You can also apply for the CCB before filing your first Canadian tax return, although you will need to provide information about your previous income.
Career Moves: More Canadians Are Choosing Skilled Trades
Skilled trades could become an even bigger part of Canada’s job market. A new survey found 50% of Canadians see trade school or an apprenticeship as the best way to prepare young people for future careers, compared with 37% who chose university.
For newcomers considering their career options in Canada, skilled trades may be worth a closer look. Many offer paid training through apprenticeships and can lead to well-paying careers without a university degree.
